Related notes

Related notes shows you other notes that seem connected to the one you’re reading. It’s a good way to rediscover something you wrote months ago and forgot.

Turn it on

Related notes needs the small model used for search by meaning. If you haven’t turned it on yet, open Settings and turn on Search by meaning, related notes and ideas over time under Finding connections. The panel also offers a Turn on button the first time.

Open it

With a note open, press ⌘J (Ctrl+J), or click the related-notes button at the top right. A panel opens on the right. Press Esc or ⌘J again to close it.

It never opens by itself and never shows anything while you type.

What each suggestion shows

  • How sure it is. “These ideas appear connected” for a strong match, “Possibly related” for a weaker one.
  • The passage that matched, and the passage in your note it matched.
  • Labels the notes share, or the same source.
  • How far apart in time they were written, for example “7 months earlier”.

Click a suggestion to open that note. If the note is part of a thread in Ideas over time, a link at the top takes you to it.

Hide a wrong suggestion

Click Not related on a suggestion. It disappears for good, in both directions: neither note will suggest the other again. An Undo appears for a few seconds in case you clicked by mistake.

It learns what you find useful

Noughtpad notices which suggestions you open and which you mark “Not related”. After a handful of each, it starts using that to decide what to show. The panel then says “Tuned to what you open and dismiss here”.

To start over, open Settings and click Reset next to Reset what related notes learned. Notes you’ve marked “Not related” stay hidden.

Ask about a note

At the bottom of the panel, Ask about this note… starts a chat about the open note and its related notes. About chat
