The short version: your notes stay on your computer. We don't run accounts, we don't collect your notes, and the app doesn't track you.

This page covers the Noughtpad app and this website, noughtpad.com. "We" means Noughtpad.

The Noughtpad app

Your notes

Your notes are files in a folder on your computer. We never receive them. Noughtpad's search index, chats and settings are also kept on your computer.

No accounts, no tracking

The app has no sign-up and no account with us. It doesn't send us usage statistics, crash reports or any other information about how you use it.

When the app connects to the internet

The app only connects to other services in these cases:

  • Checking for updates. The app asks GitHub (owned by Microsoft) whether a new version exists, shortly after it starts and every few hours, and downloads the update from GitHub if you click to install it. GitHub sees your IP address, as with any web request. See GitHub's privacy statement.
  • Downloading models. If you turn on search by meaning, or download a chat model, the model files come from Hugging Face. Hugging Face sees your IP address. No notes are sent. See Hugging Face's privacy policy.
  • Chat with an online provider. Only if you add a provider yourself (such as Anthropic, OpenAI or Google Gemini). When you ask a question, the notes you approved for that chat and your question are sent to that provider, under your own account with them and their privacy terms. Noughtpad shows you which notes will be sent and asks first. Chat with a model on your computer sends nothing anywhere.
  • Sync with Google Drive. Only if you sign in and turn on sync. Your notes, attachments, chats and related-notes choices are copied to a folder in your own Google Drive, under your Google account. Noughtpad asks Google only for access to the files it creates. Your sign-in is kept in your computer's keychain. We don't receive your notes or your sign-in. See Google's privacy policy.

Keys and passwords

API keys for chat providers and your Google sign-in are kept in your computer's keychain. They're never written to your notes folder and never sent to us.

This website

  • Hosting. The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
  • Analytics. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views. It doesn't use cookies, doesn't build a profile of you and doesn't follow you across sites.
  • No cookies. This site sets no cookies.
  • Downloads. Download links go to GitHub, which hosts the installers.

Contact form and email

If you write to us through the contact form, we receive your message, your email address and the name you give, by email. We use them only to reply and to help you. The form sets no cookies and we don't keep a copy anywhere else. We don't add you to a mailing list or share your email.

Children

Noughtpad isn't aimed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.

Your rights

Because we hold almost nothing about you, there's usually nothing to access or delete. If you've written to us and want that correspondence deleted, or have any privacy question, use the contact form.

Changes

If this changes, for example when paid sync launches, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
